Things I Learned From Volunteering at Naper Settlement's "All Hallows Eve"

It's a long story that starts out at the local Home Depot.  Since I don't own a major set of power tools (or a large vehicle to bring home long pieces of lumber), I was waiting in line to have some wood cut up into sizable pieces to bring home for some repairs to our back door.  As I was waiting in line, this couple behind me started up a conversation.  As we were talking, the guy said something to me along the lines of "don't take this the wrong way, but you should volunteer at the local haunted house."  I naturally questioned how scary I was (or am) in real life ...

Naperville resident Walt Rittle has volunteered as a blacksmith since 1990 after he retired from AT&T Bell Laboratories. The Rittles are Naperville Heritage Society members and Walt's son, Joel, was a junior volunteer. After he retired, Walt's wife, Carol, talked him into volunteering.

"She said she married me for better or for worse, but not for lunch, so she talked me into volunteering," Walt quipped.

The transplanted Pennsylvanian, who moved to Naperville in 1974, said volunteering at Naper Settlement is rewarding.

"It's an interesting and fun way to meet people," he said.

Ice Cream Cart Sales

Volunteers in high school and older are needed to sell ice cream treats and refreshing drinks from the Museum Store's ice cream cart located at the end of the Village Green and directly in front of the Chapel.
