The Village That Volunteers Built

PAW PAW POST OFFICE

Paw Paw Post Office

The Paw Paw Post Office, Naperville's first post office, operated by Postmaster Alexander Howard as early as 1833, was so named for the grove of Paw Paw trees, which stood around the building at the northeast corner of Webster Street and Jefferson Avenue. Since its move to Naper Settlement in 1977, Paw Paw trees have again been planted around the home to simulate its earlier environment.

Originally serving as a mail and stagecoach stop for the Templeton line, by 1853 the Frink and Walker coach lines brought mail to the Paw Paw Station daily by four horse-drawn carriages on their routes to Chicago, Galena and Dixon, Ill.

The building has been converted to its historical role within the museum village and also houses staff offices.
