Water Main and Electric Utility Infrastructure Project Begins March 17
Work will enhance system performance in downtown area
NAPERVILLE, Ill.-A water main and electric infrastructure improvement project that will enhance system performance and reliability in the downtown district is scheduled to start construction on March 17, 2008.
The project will be completed in phases. Phase I work will involve construction on Aurora Avenue and Main Street. Most of the infrastructure will be installed in roadways due to existing utility constraints. Consequently, lane closures are required. During Phase I, Aurora Avenue traffic will be reduced to one eastbound lane between Eagle Street and Washington Street. Westbound Aurora Avenue traffic will be detoured around the construction zone via Hillside Avenue and Chicago Avenue. A map detailing the detour is available on the city's Web site at http://www.naperville.il.us/emplibrary/AuroraAveTrafficControlMap.pdf.
Visitors to Naper Settlement, who will be arriving from the west, should be aware that traffic will be one-way eastbound on Aurora Avenue. The entrance to the Century Memorial Chapel parking lot will be open and the lot will be available to those who have scheduled the chapel for their wedding or special service. Webster Street will be one-way southbound beginning May 10. Naper Settlement's free parking lot, which is located at the corner of Webster Street and Porter Avenue, can be reached from the east by taking Hillside Road west to Webster Street north or by taking Washington Street south to Porter Avenue west.
Parking restrictions along Main Street will allow two-way traffic to be maintained while construction occurs on the east side of the roadway. Some night construction will be required to complete work within the Washington and Aurora intersection. The lane closures and Aurora Avenue detour significantly accelerate the construction schedule. As a result, this phase is anticipated for completion by May 10, 2008, at which time normal traffic conditions will resume on Aurora Avenue and Main Street.
The work consists of installing approximately 3,000 feet of 12-inch water main and 3,400 feet of electric duct bank to upgrade the existing utilities in the area. The contract was awarded to Bolder Contractors Inc. of Deerfield, Ill.
The boundaries of the work are: Aurora Avenue from Eagle Street to Washington Street, Main Street from Aurora Avenue to Water Street, Webster Street from Hillside Avenue to Aurora Avenue and Hillside Avenue from Webster Street to Washington Street.
"Project completion incentives and penalties have been incorporated into the contract in an effort to reduce the overall timeline and minimize disruption to area residents and businesses," Senior Civil Engineer Jim O'Neal said. "Access to driveways will be maintained throughout the construction project."
