Muddy dirt roads in the nineteenth Century were messy and dangerous. A group of enterprising businessmen "paved" a road from Naperville to Chicago with wide wooden planks. They profited by charging tolls. But the poorly maintained Plank Road soon rotted and warped. The investors lost their money when farmers started shipping their crops by railroad from neighboring Wheaton to Chicago.
