In conjunction with this year’s centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s passage on August 26, Naper Settlement presents HERstory Day. Join us for a variety of all-day activities and ticketed programs focused on the women’s suffrage movement and the contributions women have made throughout history!
The Naperville chapter of the League of Women Voters will be onsite for voter registration and provide reenactors who will carry signs and present speeches given by suffragists more than 100 years ago.

Women: Waves of Change Exhibit
Exhibit entry begins at 1:00 PM with timed ticket reservations every 15 minutes
Women: Waves of Change shares the many ways women have influenced civic change for over 150 years. The exhibit will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage and share the histories of local women that were foundational in the formation and development of Naperville and beyond.
Meet Ellen Martin: First Woman Voter in Illinois

The first woman to vote in Illinois was Ellen Martin of DuPage County. Due to a loophole in the Town Charter of Lombard, she and 14 other women of Lombard voted in a municipal election on April 6, 1891, which was 29 years before the passage of the 19th Amendment! Learn the surprising and entertaining story from actor Erina Johnson who portrays Miss Martin.
Alice Paul: Winning Votes for Women

Carrie’s Gift - Tour the Martin Mitchell Mansion
Downtown Naperville and Naper Settlement would not exist without the forethought of one of Naperville’s most generous benefactors, Caroline Martin Mitchell. Join our building interpreters and museum educators for a tour of her family home, Pinecraig, a Victorian mansion we fondly refer to as “Carrie’s Gift.”
